Brendan McKinney is a seasoned singer/songwriter whose music has resonated across Colorado, Philadelphia, Nashville, and Europe.
Whether performing solo or with his band, McKinney captivates audiences with his heartfelt lyrics and dynamic performances. His work has been featured in numerous TV shows, including ‘Trust Me’, ‘United States of Tara’, ‘Justified’, ‘Army Wives’, ‘Drop Dead Diva’, and ‘Shameless’, and his music was also showcased in the feature film ‘Lean on Pete’.
Praised for his compelling artistry, McKinney has earned licensing deals in LA and the UK, record deals in Nashville and Colorado, and is published through the prestigious Harlan Howard Songs in Nashville. His original compositions have found success at SXSW, further cementing his reputation in the industry.
This is McKinney’s latest recording project, ‘Skin a Cat.’ It is co-produced with Philadelphia’s Erik Horvitz, promising yet another milestone in his career.
Blending elements of Americana, rock, and Newgrass, McKinney’s sound and creativity are influenced by modern acts like Chris Stapleton and Blackberry Smoke, with a production style reminiscent of The Black Keys, delivering music that is both timeless and contemporary.
“Every track on this recording began at Min-town Studios there in Minturn Colorado,” says McKinney. “I’ve recorded a lot with Joe Bianchi there, in recent years.”
Mintown Studios is owned and operated by both Joe Bianchi and Jeff Armistead. “Joe is a natural multi-instrumentalist at performing and as a recording engineer. Jeff is an all purpose keyboardist…both on stage and in the studio,” says McKinney, “recording and playing live with them is the dog’s bollocks.”
What distinguishes this project from other recordings is the production skills of longtime friend and colleague of McKinney’s, Philadelphia native ,Erik Horvitz.
McKinney and Horvitz, who collaborated on productions years ago, reunite for this project, bringing a sense of familiarity and renewed creativity to the album.
“Erik helped me with one of my very first original projects years back in Ardmore Pennsylvania,” McKinney recalls. “ I was heading over to Europe to travel around and perform, and we put together a muti-track recording of my songs. I brought it with me to sell at shows.”
Horvitz’s production skills are highly renowned and respected in Philadelphia and surrounding areas. His expertise brings a new dimension to the band’s sound, enhancing each track’s depth and texture.
